New Wine Needs New Wineskins

New Wine Needs New Wineskins

And no one puts new wine into old wineskins. If he does, the new wine will burst the skins and it will be spilled, and the skins will be destroyed. But new wine must be put into fresh wineskins. Luke 5:37-38 ESV

This metaphor that Jesus uses was easily understood in the days of Jesus’ ministry as He walked the earth, but to us modern day westerners it is a bit bizarre. One must understand...

Articles Of Faith (Summary)

Articles Of Faith (Summary)

We believe the Bible, containing both Old and New Testaments is the inspired, infallible, inerrant, eternal, authoritative Word of God. It is without contradiction, and its origin is from the heart and mind of God. The Bible is the source of all Christian doctrine, reproof, correction, and instruction in righteousness. It cannot be added to, subtracted from, or superseded in any regard. When studying the Bible, our objective is to find God’s intended meaning of the scriptures. No scripture should ever be taken out of context.

A Christmas Poem

A Christmas Poem

The world was hopelessly lost in a thick darkness, a misty gloom;
No light, no love, no life, only fear, and anxiety; a most dreaded doom.

But God had a plan from before the foundations of time and space;
He would send His Son, a bright and shining Light to redeem the human race.

Eternal Light, Life, and Love would shine to give man hope indeed;
But God’s Son had to first enter into the womb of a virgin, as a small seed.

The Covenant (Blog)

The Covenant (Blog)

The Bible records several different covenants God made with mankind. He made a covenant with Noah and a separate one with David that are both still in effect today. He also made a covenant with Moses at Mt. Sinai that was specifically for the Jewish people. However, Jesus made the Mosaic covenant obsolete on the cross of Calvary when He instituted or brought to birth the New Covenant. It is this New Covenant that Christians enjoy today.

Welcome To Worship

Welcome To Worship

The Bible says that God inhabits the praises of His people and is seeking those who will worship Him in Spirit and in Truth. At Return Church, we meet corporately each week to worship our creator and redeemer, Jesus Christ. We recognize His personal presence in our lives as we worship Him with our entire beings: body, soul, and spirit. When we worship Him, we are ascribing the ultimate value in our lives to God. As we worship, we are giving affection, praise, and honor to the Savior Jesus Christ and gazing upon Him and His glorious grace and eternal beauty.

Why Does Return Church Exist? (Blog)

Why Does Return Church Exist? (Blog)

Return Church was established two and one-half years ago as God, through a supernatural work, brought our congregation together. Although we began as a people hurt, wounded, and disillusioned from organized religion, God miraculously brought us out and led each of us toward rediscovering an intimate love relationship with Jesus Christ. Below is our statement of purpose and identity as it articulates who we are, what we do, and why we exist as a church.

A Shift in Thinking: Old Identity vs. New Identity (Blog)

A Shift in Thinking: Old Identity vs. New Identity (Blog)

We teach a lot about being in Christ, but we live as if we don’t believe it to be true. It seems too good to be true that when we are saved God would give us a new heart, a new man, a new, born-again spirit, and a new identity. We have such a hard time believing this that we spend most of our life living from our old identity, as we continue to believe we are our old man even after we are saved and given a brand-new identity. The Bible says that in Adam all die, but in Christ all shall be made alive.

Is Your Identity In Adam Or In Christ? (Blog)

Is Your Identity In Adam Or In Christ? (Blog)

The first 14 verses in the book of Ephesians are actually one long verse in the Greek language. In this text, the apostle Paul clearly establishes who we are in Christ. Our true eternal identity is received from God, not achieved by us. We are not who we are because of how we behave, we behave the way we do, because of who we are. We all are either in Adam or in Christ. In Adam, we are a sinner, but in Christ we are Saints. In Adam, we are our old man, while in Christ we have a new man, a new nature or a new...

A Personal Invitation from God (Blog)

A Personal Invitation from God (Blog)

God gives us a personal invitation to come to Him as the source and origin of all life and love. Because He is the source, it is only in Him that we find the satisfaction, significance, and fulfillment we are all longing for. He is trying to persuade us to listen to the truth, buy it or believe it, and eat it or receive it into our hearts that our souls may live. We gain faith as we come to God, listening to the truth, then believing and receiving the truth in our hearts. God has given us a new covenant full of eternal...

The Quartet of the Vulnerable (Blog)

The Quartet of the Vulnerable (Blog)

I have been a born-again Christian for many years, but only in the past couple years have I begun to have a burden for the poor and vulnerable of our society. In fact, God told me to buy a building in Portland, a rough neighborhood on the west side of Louisville, KY, that one day would be used to minister to the disadvantaged, even before He gave me a burden for the poor and vulnerable. God was preparing the way for a new life that He would ask me to live, even before I was aware of it. God had to awaken this love for the vulnerable in my heart and once He did, then He gave me a burden and love for them that is so supernatural I have a difficult time articulating or explaining it to others.

Reciprocal Love (Blog)

Reciprocal Love (Blog)

Most people think they possess the love of God because they love their spouse, family, friends, and brothers and sisters in Christ with whom they go to church.  Jesus is challenging this thinking by questioning whether or not this is His true love because most all of these relationships are reciprocal. His love is nonreciprocal love. His, is a love that gives with no expectation of a payback; a love that gives just because it is the very nature of love to give. When we give with an expectation of reward or a gift in return, this really isn’t God’s love at all, because God’s love gives to...

Prayer in the Name of Jesus (Blog)

Prayer in the Name of Jesus (Blog)

Jesus made some remarkable statements about prayer as He taught His disciples while He ministered here on the earth 2,000 years ago. He promised that if we pray in His name, that God would answer our prayers. But Christian’s pray every day “in the Name of Jesus Christ,” and their prayers go unanswered. We know that it is impossible for God to lie, so there must be a gap in our understanding of how to pray. Most believers pray every day, so it is hard to convince them that they may not know how to pray.

Faith (Blog)

Faith (Blog)

Every Christian should explore the meaning of faith because the Bible says that we are saved by grace through faith. We are justified by faith and are made righteous by faith. We become a child of God by faith and can receive all the promises of God through faith. In fact, our entire relationship with God is predicated on faith. The problem with the concept of faith is the meaning of the word in today’s modern culture has changed drastically from the Biblical meaning; so much that it’s not clear what someone means when they say they have faith.

Righteousness

Righteousness

All Christians should seek, pursue, hunger and thirst for the righteousness of God. It should be our objective and chief aim in life. The Bible is filled with scriptures stating that God is holy and we should be holy. We know that sin separates us from God and because of sin, we were born aliens and strangers to God. The Bible even tells us that the carnal mind is an enemy of God. So, we realize that we desperately need to be made right with God.

The key is for us to finally give up on our own efforts to become righteous and turn to God for help.

The Devil's Schemes (Blog)

The Devil's Schemes (Blog)

God created two classes of beings, angels and man, giving them the free will to choose both to honor and obey God or to dishonor and disobey God.  Satan and one third of his angels sinned against God, so God cast them down to the earth. Man sinned in the Garden of Eden and God cast him out of the Garden into a cursed earth. Here man would have to earn his food by the sweat of his brow as he farmed land filled with thorns and...

The Sovereignty of God

The Sovereignty of God

I believe one of the main reasons many Christians do not pray as much as they should pray, is because of a misunderstanding of an attribute of God called, “His Sovereignty”. The word sovereign simply means supreme in power and authority, ruler, or supreme reign. When we say God is sovereign, we are saying that He is the supreme ruler of the universe, or He is in control. There is absolutely nothing that happens in the universe that is outside of God’s influence and authority.

In Christ

In Christ

The day we receive salvation, Jesus Christ literally comes to live in our hearts, and as He regenerates our spirit - we have a born-again experience. But that is not all that happens to us; by faith, God puts us “In Christ.” We don’t work our way into Christ or grow our way into Him. We enter into Christ by faith.

Does The Gospel Seem Too Good To Be True?

Does The Gospel Seem Too Good To Be True?

I always heard that if something in life seems too good to be true, then it probably is too good to be true. There are a lot of frauds and con artists in the world who are always promising things they can’t deliver, preying on the fact that we all hope to get some good news. At the same time, I believe many people can never truly believe the Gospel or the promises of God’s Word because, to our natural minds, they simply seem too good to be true...

Who Switched the Price Tags?

Who Switched the Price Tags?

Jesus taught us the attributes that He values most in Matthew chapter 5, in what is commonly known as the Beatitudes. These are the same attributes we as Christians should value today. This word “Blessed” means to be happy, fortunate, well off, or supremely blessed. He is telling us that we will be happy if we embrace these attributes, characteristics, or virtues. On the other hand, the world, the flesh, and the devil promise happiness in the exact opposite mindsets.

Merry Christmas

Merry Christmas

The essence of Christmas, what it genuinely means to me, goes beyond the Christmas narrative, and is discovered in answering the questions of why God came to earth as a man, why Jesus Christ became a human, why He lived a perfect sinless life, and why He died on a cross. Christmas is about the Gospel, the Good News that brings us peace on earth and good will toward men.
