A.    There are two coming resurrections recorded in Gods Word. The first resurrection takes place in two phases.

1.  Overcoming Saints Resurrected / Alive & Remaining Overcomers Raptured

For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord
— I Thessalonians 4:16-17

God will catch away, or Rapture, His overcoming Church just prior to the 3 ½ year Tribulation period. The non-overcoming Christians will be left behind to go through the Tribulation period.

The word Overcome simply means to subdue, conquer, prevail and get the victory. The life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ is all about overcoming. He walked through this life overcoming. He overcame temptation. He overcame death, hell and the grave. He has conquered, and He has overcome!

These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world
— John 16:33

Jesus now lives in the heart of the believer as the “Overcomer”. He has come into our lives to overcome. Through Him we too can and shall overcome the world, the flesh, the devil, death, hell and the grave.

Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world
— I John 4:4
For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith
— I John 5:4

Because He, Jesus, the overcoming Resurrected Christ, lives and abides in the heart of the believer, we too can overcome through our faith in who He is and what He has done!

The overcomer is named such because they overcome, conquer and get the victory over the struggles, obstacles and trials within and without. However the believer can also be overcome if he or she is not walking in the overcoming work and power of the indwelling Christ.

While they promise them liberty, they themselves are the servants of corruption: for of whom a man is overcome, of the same is he brought in bondage. For if after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they are again entangled therein, and overcome, the latter end is worse with them than the beginning
— II Peter 2:19-20

There is no need for the true believer not to overcome, neither to be overcome by the world, flesh and the devil. God has provided all the tools and weapons of spiritual warfare for His people to live in absolute victory.

And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death
— Revelation 12:11
(For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;) Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ
— II Corinthians 10:4-5

The parable of the ten virgins teaches us the principle of overcoming

Then shall the kingdom of heaven be likened unto ten virgins, which took their lamps, and went forth to meet the bridegroom. And five of them were wise, and five were foolish. They that were foolish took their lamps, and took no oil with them: But the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps. While the bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept. And at midnight there was a cry made, Behold, the bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet him. Then all those virgins arose, and trimmed their lamps. And the foolish said unto the wise, Give us of your oil; for our lamps are gone out. But the wise answered, saying, Not so; lest there be not enough for us and you: but go ye rather to them that sell, and buy for yourselves. And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came; and they that were ready went in with him to the marriage: and the door was shut. Afterward came also the other virgins, saying, Lord, Lord, open to us. But he answered and said, Verily I say unto you, I know you not. Watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of man cometh
— Matthew 25:1-13

This parable shows three groups of people. The wise virgins, (the overcomers), the foolish virgins, (the non-overcomers), and those that were awake to make the midnight cry.

Part of the Church that is left behind, flees into the wilderness during the Tribulation period

And the woman fled into the wilderness, where she hath a place prepared of God, that they should feed her there a thousand two hundred and threescore days
— Revelation 12:6

The Bible is clear that all seven Churches in the Book of Revelation had things to Overcome and there was a reward for Overcoming. Each Church age is a picture of the various stages in the spiritual journey and growth in the life of a believer. Every step of the way is about overcoming.

a. The Church of Ephesus

…To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the tree of life, which is in the midst of the paradise of God
— Revelation 2:7

 b.    The Church of Smyrna

…He that overcometh shall not be hurt of the second death
— Revelation 2:11

 c.     The Church of Pergamos

…To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the hidden manna, and will give him a white stone, and in the stone a new name written, which no man knoweth saving he that receiveth it
— Revelation 2:17

 d.    The Church of Thyatira

And he that overcometh, and keepeth my works unto the end, to him will I give power over the nations: And he shall rule them with a rod of iron; as the vessels of a potter shall they be broken to shivers: even as I received of my Father. And I will give him the morning star
— Revelation 2:26-28

 e.     The Church of Sardis

He that overcometh, the same shall be clothed in white raiment; and I will not blot out his name out of the book of life, but I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels
— Revelation 3:5

 f.      The Church of Philadelphia

Him that overcometh will I make a pillar in the temple of my God, and he shall go no more out: and I will write upon him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, which is new Jerusalem, which cometh down out of heaven from my God: and I will write upon him my new name
— Revelation 3:12

 g.     The Church of Laodicea

To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne
— Revelation 3:21

How do we Overcome as Believers?

The Scriptures are clear that not all Christians will be Raptured. Only the Overcoming Saints will be Raptured and all Non-Overcoming believers will be left behind to experience the Tribulation period. The question then arises, how do we know that we are overcomers?

We Overcome by putting our Faith in Jesus Christ.

For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith. Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God?
— I John 5:4-5

We Overcome by walking in all of the light of Truth that we have.

But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin. If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness
— I John 1:7-9

We overcome by the Blood of the Lamb.

And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death
— Revelation 12:11

1.  Resurrection of Tribulation Overcomers Who Gave their Lives for Their Testimony

And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them: and I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and which had not worshipped the beast, neither his image, neither had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years
— Revelation 20:4

The first phase of the first resurrection will herald in the great tribulation which will prevail on the earth under the reign of the Antichrist for three and a half years.

Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy. Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks: the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublous times. And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself: and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined. And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate
— Daniel 9:24-27
But the court which is without the temple leave out, and measure it not; for it is given unto the Gentiles: and the holy city shall they tread under foot forty and two months
— Revelation 11:2
And the woman fled into the wilderness, where she hath a place prepared of God, that they should feed her there a thousand two hundred and threescore days
— Revelation 12:6
And there was given unto him a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies; and power was given unto him to continue forty and two months
— Revelation 13:5

B. The second resurrection includes all the dead, both believers who were not overcomers at death, and all those who lived on the earth and did not believe.

1. All Non-Overcoming Believers

Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice, And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation
— John 5:28-29
But the rest of the dead lived not again until the thousand years were finished. This is the first resurrection
— Revelation 20:5

2. All Remaining Dead Raised From Death, Hell, Sea, and Dust

And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works. And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire
— Revelation 20:13-15
And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt
— Daniel 12:2
And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them. And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works. And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works. And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death
— Revelation 20:11-14
Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice, And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation
— John 5:28-29
